Males dressed as maids latest fad for Akihabara cafes TOKYO — All of the help at the Hibari-tei cafe in bustling Akihabara are dressed as maids, and they call the customers “master.” It’s pretty much like any other “maid cafe” in Tokyo’s electronics district, except for one small detail. All of them are male, wearing wigs to go along with their female uniforms. Male “maid cafes” are growing more common, and books on how to dress like a woman are starting to hit store shelves. Men wearing skirts have also been seen in Tokyo’s Harajuku and Aoyama districts. Behind this nascent trend, observers say, is that more men are beginning to enjoy dressing as a woman from a fashion viewpoint, and society is becoming more tolerant of the practice. It was 2 1/2 years ago when the owner of Hibari-tei first used a male as a maid at another maid cafe he owns. It started when one of the regular waitresses quit. A male employee dressed up as a maid and tried to serve customers. The attempt proved popular among the customers, who enjoyed the odd experience. The owner launched Hibari-tei in January 2008. About 60% of its customers are male. “Men who are not used to being served by women can feel relaxed and talk to the ‘maids’ easily because they are male,” said Chaan Sarin, who heads the cafe’s waitstaff. Before the cafe’s debut, more than 100 men applied for a maid position. After auditions narrowed the field, 15 made the cut and are still working there. One of the maids, Reina, is in his 20s. During the week he goes to work in a business suit at an information technology company, but on weekends he serves at the maid cafe wearing a size 9 uniform, padded bra and fake nails. At 165 cm tall and weighing 51 kg, he has a girlfriend, but she doesn’t know about his second job, he said. “I become a totally different person to release my stress from work. I have the feelings of a man and I will quit once I get married,” he said. More male fans are also dressing like their favorite female characters in “anime’ animation and computer games. Cashing in on this trend, Osaka-based Yu-time Publishing released the book “Otokonoko no Tameno Henshin Gaido” (“Guide for Boys to Transform Themselves”) in October 2008. The book, which comes with illustrations, explains various techniques so boys can look pretty, ranging from wearing makeup and choosing clothes to taking care of wigs and wearing pantyhose. The book has been selling well, especially in Akihabara bookstores, inspiring the publisher to produce a second volume. Meanwhile, Tokyo-based lingerie maker Wish has been selling bras for men since November 2008. It says it sold more than 10,000 in the first year. Junko Mitsuhashi, a lecturer at Tama University who wrote the book “Joso to Nihonjin” (“Disguising as Women and Japanese”), maintains that Japanese are becoming more tolerant toward men dressing as women. “People’s values are growing more diverse, and Japanese people’s perception of masculinity has changed over the years,” she said. “People began to accept men dressed as women, saying it is OK as long as they are beautiful. MOCHI お餅

お正月に日本ではお餅を食べる習慣があります。ところが毎年多くの人がそのお餅を喉に詰まらせて亡くなるそうです。特にお年寄りや小さな子供。この間に私にとってお友達から面白いことを聞きました。もしお餅を喉に詰まらせた人がいたら掃除機を使って、取りだそうです。余談、こんな話も聞きました:もしお餅を詰まらせたおじいちゃんかおばあちゃんがいたら、容赦なく両足首を持って、逆さまにして、振り回そうです。 みなさんなら、どう思ういますか。 私はこの話を聞いた時に失礼ですが笑ってしまいました。

Hummm….no sé por dónde empezar. Lo primero desearos a todos un feliz año nuevo: あけましておめでとうございます (Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu) y lo segundo explicaros que es el mochi お餅　a los que no lo sepáis.. El mochi es una especie de pastelito hecho de pasta de arroz molido y después moldeado. Se come todo el año y es también comida tradicional en el año nuevo. Es un poco pegajosillo a mi parecer. La verdad es que a mi no me “pita” mucho y paso bastante de comerlo. El caso es que cada año durante estas fechas se atragantan unos cuantos japoneses con el mochi en cuestión y pasan a mejor vida. Sobre todo gente mayor. Que en paz descansen. Antes del descanso de navidades fui con mis alumnos de español a cenar y salió el tema. Me contaron que uno de los remedios a aplicar si ocurre el caso de que alguien se atragante es coger el tubo de la aspiradora y metérselo en la boca y aspirar. Eso si, el tubo ese pequeño que trae, no el “normal”. Estuvimos un rato con el tema, yo diciendo que se estaban quedando conmigo y ellos que no que no. Pues bien, al parecer, no. Investigando en la red sale el tema. Por ejemplo en esta página web de una farmacia (la copio al final de esta entrada) que da ese remedio, eso si, como último cartucho pero lo da. Por si no estaba yo ya poco impactada con el tema hace unos días me dan otro remedio: si el que se atraganta es un abuelte/a de pequeñas dimensiones se le coge por los tobillos, se le da la vuelta y ¡hala! a esperar a que salga el mochi. He investigado en la red y de esto no he encontrado nada. Bueno el caso es que volvemos a lo de siempre, a mi no me parece que el mochi esté tan bueno como para que siendo un abuelete y a sabiendas de que que te puede ir la vida en ello te empeñes en comerlo. ….Será que la tradición es la tradición.

M&M's

Hoy voy a hablar de un sitio que me ha impresionado. No tiene nada que ver con Japón ni con España. Es la tienda de M&M's con la que me he topado hoy, en Times Square. No sabía que tenían montado semejante imperio, una tienda de tres plantas en la que venden de todo, desde adornos navideños a joyería con el “careto” de las pastillas de chocolate. Con un olorcillo a a chocolate, toda la tienda…..…que peligro, Daban ganas de lamer las paredes. Aunque no me he comprado nada creo que la tienda merece una visita sólo por el espectáculo. Una es de pueblo y le impresionan estas cosas..

昨日M&M'sのお店に行って来ました。場所はタイムズ・スクエアのすぐ近く。面白いところだと思います。 Tシャツ、マグカップ、ぬいぐるみ、ボードゲーム・・・など買えます。 Today I found a really attractive shop while walking on Times Square, it´s th M&M's one. It´s really a funny place. It´s a three floor store.. I think it´s a must see even if you´re not a big fan of M&M's , you can find almost every kind of object.

Ahí tenéis: ramos de flores con el careto de Hello Kitty. Para que se vea que “efectivamente hay de tó” el otro día sacamos en una floristería de Tokio en la zona de Ginza estas fotos. La verdad es que están bastantes logrados. Bueno, a mi me gustan….. 東京の銀座にある花屋でこの写真を撮りました。かわいいですね！。 Those are some pictures we took at a flower shop in Tokyo around the Ginza area.

東京でサンタクロースを見ました。彼はパエリアのでデリバリーのお店で働くそうです。 Papa Noel está en Tokio, va en moto y reparte paellas a domicilio, ¡tócate un pie!. Os dejo con el enlace a la página web de la empresa para la que trabaja por si os apetece echarle un ojo. ¡Dios!!!!!acabo de meterme en la página (no la conocía, la he buscado para la entrada del blog) y hay hasta una paella de queso gratinado al curry que lleva pollo, mayonesa y tomate entre otras cosas. Será la “nueva cuisine” esa que la llaman..........
